Broken Survivor. Apropos. Such an accurate title for the words contained in its pages. After having the opportunity to read this novel, I can’t help but write this review differently than I have others. This book simply can not be appreciated to its fullest potential without knowing that it’s based off true events. While it wouldn’t make the story any less gripping, it does, however, make the experience of reading it that much more personal. Having been, for a time, a foster child myself and living through childhood events that broke me only to make me who I am today, I can attest that this novel deserves no less.
Carrying us through the life of “Holly”, we are preview to many emotions…pain from abuse, loss, heartbreak, abandonment, disappointment, and fear, but most of all hope, love, and a commendable strength to overcome. While scenes aren’t overwhelmingly dark or sexually descriptive, depending, it still maintains a core that left me feeling a bit raw. The love between Zander and Holly is her saving grace and was extremely touching to read. From my point of view, Broken Survivor is more than a classified romance. It tells its readers to never give up. To fight and aim to positively survive no matter what. From life altering loss to life altering blessings, this novel shows how love really can conquer even the darkest of foes.
I happily give this wonderful book 4.5 out of 5 Cupcakes!
